16A post win war cry webIn a good sign for the upcoming State Championships, Drummoyne Water Polo Club has emerged victorious in NSW Water Polo’s U/16 A and B boys’ summer competition.

Drummoyne Devils supporters were out in force when both the 16A and 16B boys’ teams contested their Summer competition water polo grand finals at Ryde Pool on 4 April.

The 16A boys won 7 – 5 against Hunter and the 16B team won 4 – 2 against Balmain.

“Both teams played a consistent and controlled game which is key to good water polo,” said Club President, Michael Hahn. “The win by our 16A team is particularly special as it’s the first time in our Club’s 108 year history that we’ve won the premiership in that division.”

The wins have come at a good time for the club with the upcoming NSW U/16 State Championships for boys and girls’ teams scheduled from 20 to 22 April.

“It’s great to be heading into the State Championships with this important win behind us,” said 16A boys’ coach Petar Petrovic. “The boys have worked extremely hard over the past six months and their fitness and team skills have improved enormously. The win is a great credit to each of them.”

The 16B team’s win capped off a strong season that saw them only lose one game all summer.

“Over the past three years, we’ve narrowly missed a grand victory on a few occasions so this win is especially sweet,” said 16B boys’ coach Fraser Foristal. “Everyone has contributed to making this a sensational comp and a win by both teams is an unparalleled achievement.”16B_002a web
Drummoyne Water Polo is hosting the State Championships, with the boys’ games to be held at Drummoyne Pool and the majority of the girls’ games at MLC Burwood. Nineteen boys’ teams and 18 girls’ teams from throughout NSW will take part.

“We invite everyone to come along and see these young champions in action,” said Mr Hahn. “Water polo is a fantastic game to play and watch and we’d love to see plenty of people come along to support the Devils.”

The metropolitan water polo winter season competition commences in May and Drummoyne Water Polo Club welcomes enquiries from sponsors or prospective players for their men’s, ladies, boys and girls’ teams.
