Well done AJ. Go hard play strong be a Devil at the Olympics.
Hi all you Olympic watchers. Great news for Aidan Roach this week with Water Polo Australia nominating AJ as a member of the London 2012 Australian Olympic Water Polo team. The nominated team is subject to appeal and will be finalised as soon as the appeal is resolved. The full team is on the AWPI website.
This is exciting news for AJ, what an understatement, who is currently in camp in Greece and will play in a tournament in Italy next week. AJ was the first Drummoyne junior to be selected to play for the Australian Open team and he is our first Olympian. AJ has gone one step further than Brian Hamill who was selected as a non travelling reserve for the 1964 Olympic team. Brian who now resides near Murwillumbah will be a very proud man as is the entire Drummoyne Water Polo community.
AJ who played his first game of water polo for Drummoyne when he was nine in the Under 14s coached by the great Les Wark navigated his way through five seasons in the Under 14s before gaining selection for NSW. AJ has proudly represented NSW in all age group teams and was a foundation member of the Drummoyne Devils National League team in 2008. AJ debuted for Australia in the World League preliminaries in Adelaide in 2009. In 2010 AJ played in the World Championships and has worked hard to achieve this distinction gaining experience playing in Turkey, Montenegro and Serbia following two National League finals appearances with the Drummoyne Devils.
1999 Drummoyne U14s 13 years later AJ is off to the Olympics.
Well done and congratulations AJ. A great achievement and thoroughly deserved. Make sure everyone sends AJ a message of congratulations via Facebook or email.
I must temper my enthusiasm and remind everyone that the final team selected to play will be ratified as soon as the appeal by a squad member not selected has been resolved.
I’m sorry I can’t hold back. I’m excited. Go AJ. Go Drummoyne. Go Australia. Go you good thing! (Buddha Handy is a regular at the Drummoyne lunches and would not mind me using his line). Start spreading the news.
